Cock Radio, on the Couch, with Zipp
G’dday Zipp, welcome to the Couch.
Thanks, good to be here.
When did you first join the Hash?
I joined the hash in 1983. My first run was with the Harriets. I found a male sponsor, paid my guest fees and did my first ever run through the jungle. Needless to say, I was last but I was sold on the hash. No one explained anything to me so I had one beer and walked down the road to catch the bus home. I never did my down-down as a virgin.
Wow, long time Hasher. So how did you get your name?
I was in Pan Asia Hash in 1989 and J.J and I met up with Hashers from Borneo Hash who were appalled that we had run for five years and did not yet have a hash name. They asked for my first name but they could not come up with anything from that. They then asked for my family name - “Rodrigues” and they immediately said Spanish Fly. When I told them it was a Portuguese name, they then decided “Portuguese Zipp” would be better. Fly, Zipper, Zipp. Get it?
I prefer the other version of when Gypsy and I were dating. The guys would ask him, “So, are you getting any?” and he would reply, “Zipp”.
Haha, very good. Do you have a memorable moment?
I turned up at my first Interhash with my parents. They did say bring your family. My Dad thought it was great when they handed out beers on the bus ride from Bangkok to Pattaya. Thankfully, they did house my parents in a different wing of the hotel from where the rest of the hash was. As a result, I was allowed to keep hashing.
What about your Favourite Run site?
Jalan Kampong Chantek. I love the hills and you just never go wrong with a hash there.
The Aussies could! What do you like about the Hash?
It’s about people with like minded minds or lack thereof.
What do you dislike?
So many men, so little time.
Best ON ON?
Mr Ho’s Christmas dinner. Every one of them.
I’m going have to stay in town one Christmas then. Anyone you particularly admire on the Hash?
Sybil: When I first met her, I’d trail behind her. Ok, I would be huffing and puffing behind her and she would say, “I’m not running too well today, I just played two games of squash”. I still trail behind her today; she always runs and would berate herself if she walked.
. On the Hash you should………
…always look out for a new comer and make the person feel like one of the family.
That could put them right off !! Any food you would not eat?
Road kill.
What is your favourite run of all time?
The one Gypsy and I did at Murugan Temple on a hill near old Choa Chu Kang. The Temple and even the hill have disappeared over time but it was my favourite.
But at least Gypsy hasn’t disappeared! You are married?
Yes to Gypsy, who I met on the Hash.
Children?
Only Gypsy.
Yeah, that would be enough for anyone! Could you improve the Hash?
We should incorporate the Hash Hymn as part of the evening.
Is that the one that goes ‘Him, him, f**ck him?’
Umm, no, not really.
Oh, ok. What changes have you noticed at the Hash over the years?
We don’t sing the Hash Hymn as the final song at On On’s. No one calls, On On or holds checks.
I try to hold the girl’s hands! Any words of wisdom to leave us with?
On On
Finally, do you follow Boo?
Follow Boo, I love the guy; he’s the best trail master in Singapore.
Yeah, but I hope Boo doesn’t read this and find out what we really think of him!
On that note, thank you Zipp, hope you enjoyed sharing with us!
You're right, it was a blast!
